Zimbabwe wary of Muralitharan, Malinga threat

Pallekele, March 9 (AFP) - Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura has pinpointed Muttiah Muralitharan and Lasith Malinga as a double danger when they meet Sri Lanka in the World Cup on Wednesday.

The African nation, who have never beaten Sri Lanka in four previous World Cup matches, need a win to stay in hunt for a quarter-final place from Group A which is topped by New Zealand ahead of Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia.

Zimbabwe have two points from their win over Canada while they lost to New Zeaaland and Australia. "It's a very important game as we only have two points. We'll be looking to play our best cricket against Sri Lanka and to do that we need to make a competitive score against their quality bowlers," said Chigumbura.

Chigumbura said Zimbabwe have a plan to tackle off-spinner Muralitharan, who has taken the most one-day wickets, and slinger Malinga who took a career-best 6-38, including a hat-trick, against Kenya.

"Sri Lanka's whole attack has match-winners with Murali and Malinga obviously the big names, they are experienced and they know their conditions well and will use them to the best of their abilities. We have just got to make sure we play them properly and stop them getting wickets, especially in their first spells," said Chigumbura.

Sri Lanka know any upset would leave them in danger of missing out on the knockout phase.

The 1996 winners and 2007 runners-up have five points from four games and need a win to ensure they reach the quarter-finals. They face extra pressure because their last match is away against New Zealand in Mumbai.

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara realises the importance of victory over Zimbabwe. "Our focus is on the immediate game so it doesn't really matter where you finish up. You need to beat every single team to get into the final, and to win the World Cup," said Sangakkara, whose team lost to Pakistan and saw their match against Australia abandoned due to rain.

Sangakkara defended his batsmen, especially opener Tillakaratne Dilshan who was involved in a verbal stand-off with Australian pace bowler Shaun Tait where he lost his composure and his wicket.

"In cricket you have instances where not everyone shines every day. You always get matches where certain people shine and some don't," said Sangakkara, who was 73 not out when the rain washed out the Australia match.

"I think batsmen go through certain phases. The most important thing at all times in high-performance situations is to maintain equilibrium, make
sure that your emotions remain the same at all times."

"Dilshan has been our best performer over the last few years. He has won us so many games so we just want him to go out and we want him to be focused and keep his aggression," he said.

Sri Lanka are likely to bring in paceman Dilhara Fernando for his first match in the World Cup.

India huff and puff over the line against Dutch

India's game against the Netherlands is best viewed in context of this fact: After a superb start to their campaign with 292/6 score in the opening game against England, the Dutch crumbled for 115 in under 32 overs against the West Indies, and for 120 in 34.5 overs against South Africa.

Viewed from that perspective, the game today was never going to be competitive; the question always was not whether India would win, but what the Indians would take away from the game in the form of learnings.

Would we, for instance, try the likes of Ravichandran Aswhin and Ashish Nehra, to get an idea of their form and fitness ahead of the big games?
The answer was half and half --- India brought in Nehra for Munaf, but persisted with Chawla while leaving Ashwin on the bench (A wag on Twitter remarked the other day: "Ashwin is Dhoni's secret weapon. He is saving him for the IPL.").

"Compared to Ashwin, Chawla needs more practice," Dhoni said before the game --- a fairly bizarre statement to make. The Indian selectors and captain hadn't felt the need to play Chawla in the squad even once in the 12 months leading up to the World Cup. Which raises the question: Do you play your men into form in the run up to the World Cup, or do you use cricket's biggest stage to wet nurse your players and give them form and confidence?
Back to the game, where the Netherlands can actually pat themselves on the back for having lasted longer against the Indians than they managed in the previous two games (46.4 overs) and also that they managed to score more (189) than they got against the West Indies and South Africa.

Credit for this is owed to a solid if unspectacular start on a Firozeshah Kotla track that had very little in it for seam bowlers early on (MS Dhoni brought Yusuf Pathan on as early as the 4th over, after just one over from Nehra; Harbhajan came on in the 7th at the other end).

Eric Scwarczynski, making his first game, and Wesley Baressi had to work to make runs especially against the slower bowlers on a slow pitch, but the 56 runs they added at a decent 3.7 put a decent platform in place.

Once Piyush Chawla --- who in recent times appears to have become a googly bowler with leg spin as his surprise weapon, rather than the other way around --- struck with one of his googlies that Scwarczynski misread, staying back and making a mess of an attempted dab to be bowled through the gate.

From that point on it was a fairly dismal procession. The only real point of interest was whether the likes of Ryan ten Doeschate and Tom Cooper would manage to put a scare into the bowling side. They didn't. Yuvraj Singh foxed ten Doeschate by tossing one up a bit wider and giving it more of a tweak; the batsman drove as invited only to find the ball flaring off the outer edge for Zaheer Khan in the outfield to hold inches inside the line at long off.

Nehra, whose opening spell was one over, was brought back in the 30th to use any reverse possible with a ball by then scruffed by the hard Kotla outfield; he struck with his first ball, an off cutter outside the line of the stumps and going further that Cooper aimed a hit at and managed only to snick behind.

Once those two wickets fell, in the 29th and 30th overs, the procession resumed thanks to some amateurish running between the wickets, a fortuitous wicket to Chawla, and another guileful display by Yuvraj Singh who yet again was the best Indian spinner on view.

What saved Netherlands' blushes was a 38 run partnership for the 9th wicket between Peter Borren and Mudassar Bukhari at a hectic 9.9 runs per over.
Borren began upping the ante in the 42nd over when he lashed the otherwise tight Yuvraj for ten runs including two fours.

In the next over, he did Dhoni's plan to give Chawla some confidence a bit of no-good when he carted the leg spinner for two huge sixes over long on and midwicket.

Bukhari got into the act as well, smashing two sixes off Nehra and one off Harbhajan, before Zaheer returned to enforce discipline, taking both batsmen out in the 47th over to ensure that India's bowling did not have to blush too furiously.

Chawla's day was best summed up by an incident in the 39th over. He started with a half-tracker so horrible schoolboys would blush to have bowled it --- it was dumped half way down the pitch, it was outside line of leg, it was a horror of a ball. Kervezee took a swing at a ball he could have left alone and gotten the wide, or swept behind square; all he managed to do was pick out Harbhajan Singh on the line at midwicket. As he saw his spin partner claim the catch, Chawla reacted with an embarrassed smile that stayed on his face as his mates came over to congratulate him.

It was that kind of day --- the spinner showed a palpable lack of control particularly on his leg breaks; on the few occasions when pressure was turned on, he reacted by losing even the little control he did have.

As for the other spinner, Harbhajan went another game without a single wicket to show for his efforts --- this despite a helpful track and mediocre opposition. 'Nuff said.

In sum, India's performance with the ball and in the field told us nothing we did not know --- the fielding remains full of holes waiting to be exploited; the bowling with the exception of Zaheer and, ironically, Yuvraj, remains club class --- and those are bad signs ahead of big games against South Africa and the West Indies.

All the excitement of India's chase was confined to the first ten overs, during which the combination of Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar and Yusuf Pathan plundered 83 runs off the Dutch bowling.

Sehwag (39 off 26) was murderous, continuing his practice of hitting the first ball of the Indian innings for a four and blasting 4 more boundaries and two sixes with stroke-play bordering on the arrogant.

Sachin Tendulkar (27 off 22), in contrast, was imperious, stroking six silken fours on both sides of the wicket with little regard for the identity of the bowler or the line and length of the deliveries he chose to hit.

Sehwag was particularly severe on the slow left arm of Pieter Seelar, whom he took for 11 runs off 4 balls faced (one four, one six, one single, thank you) while Sachin picked ten Doeschate for special attention, hammering his right arm medium offerings for 20 runs off 9 balls faced in course of an innings that saw him become the first player in history to cross 2000 runs in World Cups.

Both openers, and the promoted Pathan(11 off 10), fell to their own exuberance rather than to any special excellence in Seelar's bowling. Sehwag moved outside the line and tried to thump Seelar over point but only managed a slice to the fielder there; Tendulkar skipped down the track to Seelar and only managed to hole out to long off; a predetermined Pathan misread a quicker one, his bat was poised already for a full swing and all he managed with a hurried defensive prod was to pat it tamely back to the bowler.

The rest settled down to huff and puff their way to the target, creating artificial excitement with the loss of more wickets. Kohli playing all around a straight Borren delivery to be bowled off stump; Gambhir, who survived a run out opportunity, giving it away by moving too far across to a Bukhari delivery to be bowled leg stump off his thigh pad.

Sanity returned with MS Dhoni (19 off 40) and Yuvraj Singh (51 off 73) --- weighing in with the bat yet again in a second successive Man of the Match performance -- combining in unhurried fashion to walk the team past the target, with a 52 run unbeaten partnership at a sedate 3.9
MS Dhoni has said that India's strength is batting, and that the unit feels more comfortable chasing targets rather than setting them.

Since that statement, the Indians have played two lesser-rated sides. And the assessment that sticks in the mind is that of former skipper Sourav Ganguly, who in course of a commentary stint today said, "I know Dhoni prefers to chase, but the Indian team has looked far more assured batting first than chasing."

Dilshan guides Sri Lanka into quarterfinals

Together with fellow opener Upul Tharanga, who hit a career-best 133, Dilshan put on a new World Cup opening stand of 282 to guide Sri Lanka to an imposing 327-6 before a packed 30,000 crowd at Pallekele stadium.

Zimbabwe made a fighting reply with Brendon Taylor (80) and Regis Chakabva (35) through a solid 116-run start before the innings fell apart, as they lost their last their last nine wickets for just 63 runs.

Dilshan - Sri Lanka

Dilshan, who bettered his previous best of 4-29 against India at Dambulla in 2005, also became the 11th all-rounder, and the second Sri Lankan behind Sanath Jayasuriya, to score a hundred and take four wickets in an ODI.

The result meant Sri Lanka, with seven points from five matches in Group A, become the first side to enter the last eight.

New Zealand, with six points from four matches, Pakistan (six from four) and defending champions Australia (five from three) are virtually certain of filling the three other qualifying places from the group.

"Dilshan has that magic touch with bat, ball and on the field," said Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara, who also praised Muttiah Muralitharan who took 3-34 on his last appearance in his home town of Kandy.

"Murali is a champion, and that's why he is rated the best in the world. When the tough times come, he stands up."

Man of the match Dilshan said: "This is the best match of my career. I think everyone's performing well, we are in a good position."

Sri Lanka owed their total to Dilshan and Tharanga who set the ball rolling after they were put into bat on a batting-friendly pitch, just failing to beat the world record first wicket stand of 286 runs.

Tharanga, who also featured in a that stand, with Jayasuriya against England at Leeds in 2006, hit his 10th one-day hundred, while Dilshan notched his ninth, and second in the World Cup.

Their stand was also the fourth highest partnership for any wicket in ODI history.

Dilshan, 34, smashed one six and 16 boundaries during his attractive 131-ball knock, cutting loose as early as in the second over, hitting paceman Tinashe Panyangara for three boundaries and a six.

The 26-year-old left-hander Tharanga, whose previous best of 120 came against England at Lord's in 2006, hit 17 boundaries during his 141-ball innings, as both the openers batted without trouble.

Dilshan reached his hundred with a quick single towards cover off Elton Chigumbura, taking 95 balls to reach the three-figure as a capacity 30,000 gave him a standing ovation.

In the 33rd over, Tharanga hit Tinashe Panyangara for another boundary to create a new World Cup record for the first wicket, beating the 194 set by Pakistan's Saeed Anwar and Wajahatullah Wasti, against New Zealand at Manchester in 1999.

Tharanga soon joined Dilshan as century maker when he drove Raymond Price towards extra-cover to reach his first World Cup hundred.

Tharanga was the first to go, miscuing a drive off paceman Christopher Mpofu in the 45th over, while Dilshan fell to a lofted shot off spinner Prosper Utseya in the next.

Mpofu then chipped in with wickets of Mahela Jayawardene (nine), Angelo Mathews (nought) and Chamara Silva (four) to finish with 4-64 in an otherwise hapless Zimbabwean bowling show.

Sri Lanka now face New Zealand in their last match in Mumbai on March 18 which will decide where they finish in the group.

Zimbabwe, with two points from four matches, can still make it to the quarters (on better net run-rate) if they win their last two matches, the first of which is against Pakistan on Monday and the next against Kenya on March 20.

Katrina Tries To Patch Up With Salman?

Reports have it that Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif's relationship is in trouble. But Katrina seems to be doing her best to make the relationship work again.

Apparently, Katrina did not want to go to Salman's Panvel farmhouse for his birthday celebrations earlier this week, but changed her mind at the last minute and reached the farmhouse just a few minutes before midnight to bring the superstar's birthday. In fact, Katrina cut short her shoot for Vipul Shah's Singh Is King so that she did not miss the party. As per schedule, Katrina was supposed to be in Punjab till December 27 shooting for the film. But she made sure that the shoot was postponed so that she could be with Salman. On Katrina's request, Vipul stopped his schedule midway on December 26th and the entire unit returned to Mumbai. According to sources, Katrina told Vipul and Anees that she wanted to spend the New Year at home with her family but the real reason was that wanted to be with Salman for his party.

Miracles And Mediocrities, Shocks And Shockers In A Tale Of Two Groups

We have finally reached the half way point in the group stages and this World Cup is shaping up to be a tournament of contrasts, the most obvious of which is that between the two groups.

Currently group B resembles a seven man all-in wrestling bout that the Dutch, as conscientious objectors, are boycotting. This scrap could go all the way. After all, the Irish have beaten the English who edged past the South Africans who walloped the West Indies who trounced Bangladesh who overcame the Irish. Only India are unbeaten but they still contrived to tie with England.

England, briefly top of the group, can be sent packing if they lose to Bangladesh and West Indies. Ireland can still qualify if they beat the Netherlands and West Indies. Bangladesh have turned in some dreadful performances themselves both on and off the pitch (if the supporters can't even identify the right bus to stone it's a bit rich to have a go at the players), but can still go through if they beat England and England in turn lose to West Indies. Had Ireland not thrown away a winning position against Bangladesh they would be virtually in the quarter finals already. I'm sure India will have much easier games ahead than the one they endured on Sunday at Bangalore.

In short for those of you not keeping up, Group B is thrilling and a testament both to the beguiling powers of the lesser nations and the enduring appeal of cricket played over the longer limited overs format. Who knows? At this rate the cricket authorities may even come up with some mad cap crazy idea to lengthen the sport even further; maybe to five days and scrap the limitation on overs altogether. Think how much fun that could be.

By contrast, Group A has been a marathon yawn-fest. True, Pakistan did spring a surprise by overturning Sri Lanka in Colombo, but Zimbabwe, Canada and the epically dreadful Kenyans have produced cricket of such startlingly woeful quality that any sense of jeopardy, sporting thrill and tension is almost entirely absent from their matches against the test playing teams notwithstanding Pakistan's generous attempts to make a game of it for half the match against Canada.

There is, I suppose, a certain curiosity in watching the mightily proportioned Canadian, Balaji Rao, propel his tweakers off an energy saving four pace "run up". And Zimbabwe's battery of spinners seem to span the generations from the baby faced Utseya, through 80's look a like Graeme Cremer all the way up to the craggy Ray Price who I swear was hawking nylons and black market butter to struggling housewives between air raids in the London blitz of 1940. But Kenya appear to be going nowhere with a team kept in cold storage since the last World Cup.

The only mildly diverting cricketing issues yet to be settled in Group A remain the final placings for the pre-ordained top four. Sri Lanka, by losing to Pakistan and having their match against Australia rained off will now struggle to make the top 2 unless New Zealand overcome the Pakistanis. How that will affect the final matches in Group B is anyone's guess.

As an England fan I would far rather face NZ or Pakistan in the quarter finals than Sri Lanka so finishing third in Group B might best be avoided if possible.

Of the major nations the surprises for me have been New Zealand's general frailty with the bat, the West Indies' consistency and Australia's continuing dominance; though perhaps I should also add England's startling propensity for producing the best matches and Pakistan's failure to lose at least one game through terrible fielding.

New Zealand on paper look a tough one day outfit but Ryder, Taylor and McCullum have failed to click. My colleague on Test Match Sofa, Jarrod Kimber, wrote off the Kiwis from day one, but then he's Australian. Annoyingly he looks to be right.

Kemar Roach is covering up a lot of mediocrity in the West Indies' bowling attack but with Darren Bravo and Chris Gayle finding the big shots, they could be the surprise package of the tournament.

As for Australia they just keep rolling on despite an unbalanced and inappropriate side for the conditions. They are also burdened with some of the zaniest selectors outside North Korea. In a stunningly bizarre move, the injured left arm fast bowler Doug Bollinger has been replaced in the squad by the previously hamstrung left handed middle order batsman and President of The Society For Earnest Foreheads, Mike Hussey. Like for like? Well, I suppose they're both Australian, both left handed and both play cricket.

So far they've barely been tested, of course, with South Africa and India absent from their group and the heavens opening in Colombo. But whilst an India v Sri Lanka final would satisfy the advertisers and neutrals alike, natural pessimism tells me they could yet go all the way, much to the bottomless chagrin of an already troubled world.

Sallu Katrina Drifting Away?

The rumours about Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif drifting away have been doing the rounds for quite a while now. But it seems that the final nail in the coffin was hammered in by Sallu himself, when he got embroiled in that ugly broil with Shah Rukh Khan at Katrina's birthday bash.

Sallu Katrina Drifting Awa

According to sources in the industry, Katrina has been feeling suffocated by Salman and his possessiveness for a while now. She is young and her career is going great guns. She wants to be doing everything that girls of her age are doing and have fun. And she definitely doesn't want a fuddy daddy like Salman hanging on and monitoring her every move. She is the one who has been wanting out in the relationship and it is Salman who is not willing to let go. In fact, Katrina's birthday bash, thrown by him, is believed to be one of his attempts to woo her back. But it probably had the opposite effect following the ugly spat. Since Salman is still the superstar, he displayed his clout as the who's who of the industry turned up at the bash. Katrina was probably a little placated by this starry turnout. But then Salman went ahead and spoilt everything by picking up a fight with SRK. Not only has the focus moved away from her birthday, but now Katrina is also left wondering whether the Salman SRK fallout will effect her career or not.

Shah Rukh Khan had better look over his IPL shoulder. He's quite likely to find a certain Salman Khan breathing down his starry neck. Reportedly, Salman Khan is next in line to bite the IPL bait; Katrina Kaif and he are being touted as the next brand ambassadors of 'Indi Commandos'.

Salman's Next IPL Khan

Mukesh Patel, Kochi IPL co team owner told an eager media that, "We are currently talking to Salman and Katrina for the endorsement deals." Earlier, Kat was seen buoying Mallya's 'Bangalore Royal Challengers,'; Khan, it's being said is rather keen on sampling those delights of the IPL pie.

If Khan and Kaif jump onto the IPL bandwagon, it will ensure the right mix of glam and cricket. As per insiders, the Kochi IPL team is also ready with a promotional video by Priyadarshan, that's likely to be aired soon.

Kareena keeps her cool though Priyanka makes her wait for hours.......

Saif Ali Khan’s love and attention has surely toned down the temper and attitude of Bollywood’s fashion diva Kareena Kapoor. We got a hint of this, when Bebo was made to wait for hours by Priyanka Chopra, but all it could spark out of Bebo was a sour smile.

Kareena & Priyanka

It all happened on Friday evening when Kareena drove down all the way from Pune to Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai for shooting her televised act for an award ceremony, only to find that the stage had been occupied by Priyanka Chopra. When Piggie Chops saw Bebo, she walked upto her and told her that she could not give the stage until 1 am (although Kareena was assigned the stage at 12 am).

Bebo was ready with make-up and hair. So, she waited patiently for sometime. However, PC continued to rehearse till 4 am, and by that time, the exhausted Kareena had left for home.

The next morning, Kareena asked her manager Zahid to cancel the shooting (with Salman for Bodyguard), which was scheduled on Saturday in Pune and then came back to the studio to finish her song.

This would normally have ignited some heated verbal spats from Kareena but this time, the lady kept her cool and later called up the organizers to complain of the inconvenience caused by their mismanagement. They explained it to her that because of some technical problems, Priyanka’s act took a longer time.

PC’s spokesperson said, “Priyanka was not aware that Bebo had to wait for hours. Not that I am aware of. Priyanka had a long act with many changes.”
